Sullivan County Garden Tour — Bethel & North Branch

Meet up at 10:30 am at the home of Stephen Lyles. Like democracy, Lyles’ garden is a constantly evolving work in process, forty-two years, and never done. The gardens include a fenced area for growing a few things that are not deer-proof, if there is such a thing. He’s recently installed a pergola leading from the house to the horse barn. Turn out pasture for two horses. Small pond with fountain.

You’ll then take a short trip to White Sulphur Springs for lunch and a tour of Ken Wampler’s garden. A bag lunch from the Bethel Market Cafe is included in the price of the tour.
Ken’s garden wraps around the house, a former one-room school, embracing it. Paths meander leading to the vegetable garden, the meadow and the hills beyond. The garden is a product of 30+ years of planning and planting, changing plans, replanting, and making peace with nature. He invites you to explore his hillside garden of vegetables, perennials, shrubs and trees.

You’ll then head over to North Branch to the garden of Elisabeth Sinsabaugh & Eric de la Cova. Their homestead is a personal exploration of gardening methods and food preservation. Organic practices such as no-till, sheet mulching, and hugelkultur are the foundation of their ongoing work to create an edible landscape. They welcome you to join them during peak season as they harvest and “put up” food for the winter. Throughout the visit, Eric and Elisabeth will give demonstrations and entertain lively discussions on all things gardening including garden crafts, canning, fermentation, and pickling. Homemade refreshments will be available for purchase to benefit Sullivan County Democratic Committee.
