There are many great resources available to help guide your decision to run and to campaign successfully.
We’ve done the legwork for you, and will point you in the right direction through an index of online resources and a network of local mentors who are former and current officeholders, candidates, and experienced campaigners.
We’ll help you start the process, beginning with how to seek endorsement from your local Democratic Committee.
Before you start, consider these questions. Knowing the answers and having a clear message are the first steps toward success.
1.) Why are you running? Is there a problem you want to solve? Are you drawn to public service? What can you offer to voters? What makes YOU different from the other candidates? What are the top three issues or values in your community on which your platform will be based?
2.) Do you have the time to spend on running a winning campaign? Do you have the support of your immediate family? A lasting candidate spends time getting to know the voters and learning about their concerns by attending local meetings and events, and importantly through one on one contact with voters. If elected, great officials dedicate large amounts of time addressing residents’ concerns, learning more about dealing with issues that affect their community and working to solve problems. Great candidates spend the time earning the trust and respect of voters. Great elected officials never stop doing the same.
3.) Campaigns need people and money. Are you able to ask for help, even when you don’t think you need it? Winning campaigns aren’t solo flights. You’ll need help with winning endorsements, petitioning to be on the ballot, fundraising, effective outreach, and the myriad details of campaign finance compliance. None of this is hard, but you can’t do it alone.
