Independence Day

By | July 4, 2023

We celebrate the beginning of the great experiment known as America today.  Nearly 250 years later, the experiment continues, showing its strength and fragility.

Protecting the self-evident truths of equality and the inalienable rights of life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness remains our goal, just as it was in 1776.  Our understanding of what this means has evolved over the years as we’ve become a more inclusive and tolerant nation.

Over time our country has been tested through adversity of nearly every kind. On the eve of our entry into WWII, Franklin Roosevelt outlined the essential principles of democracy and how they should be shared throughout the world – Freedom of Speech and Expression, Freedom to Worship in one’s own way, Freedom from Want, and Freedom from Fear.

Now, globally, nationally, and locally, the robust nature of these freedoms is at risk.

We can and should defend them, starting locally.  Our County Legislature has, through its actions, limited freedom of speech in public meetings, silencing both legislators and the public.  Our County Legislature has limited freedom from want by reducing services to residents and leaving positions unfilled.  Our County Legislature has fostered a culture of fear by its public actions and statements made by its Chair.

Election day is November 7th.  It’s time to elect legislators who will serve our residents, invest in our county and make Sullivan County an ideal place to live and work for everyone.

Anne Hart, Chair
Sullivan County Democratic Committee
